How Literal is the 1972 Translation Into English of J.L. Borges' Historia Universal de la Infamia?

This article analyzes A Universal History of Infamy, the 1972 translation into English Historia de la Infamia (hereinafter, HUI). While assessing this translation's degree literality, authors also characterize how project at stake evolved. Initially, J.L. Borges would have planned to rewrite book in (in 1968, with help his translator Norman di Giovanni). He later, 1971, contented himself attenuating baroque style original prose and ultimately gave up all collaboration. The bulk was then left Giovanni. Textual analysis, combined data on translation/publication context some HUI compositions, allow explore hypothesis that higher fidelity certain translations is linked a possible sticking overall goal making flow, Giovanni's often recomposed sentences incurred interpretation errors.
